Desktop Transformation

Desktop Transformation

From Windows XP to Windows 7, Windows 7 to Windows 10 (we will not mention Windows 8 ) there has always been a tried and trusted traditional monolithic way of moving between the Microsoft Operating System releases

Specific and expensive elongated projects initiated to carry out application rationalisation, testing, remediation, data migration and desktop device replacements ultimately see the user being presented with a new way of working.

However, both are labour and capital intensive and the move to Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 Apps (formerly known as Office 365) will revolutionise this process and the way people work.

So... what changes?

  1. Windows 10 and M365 Apps Evergreen. An iterative cycle of incremental software updates which allows users to get access to new features, easier and more often and without the disruption and investment of a traditional Desktop Transformation project.  The introduction of Microsoft Autopilot will also consumerise the way desktop hardware devices are provisioned and deployed to users.  Desktop hardware refresh cycles will also be aligned to the support of Windows 10 builds and therefore the days of sweating an asset for 8-10 years will no longer be supported, organisations will need to stay modern which will have its own residual benefits. For example, staff retention and attraction.

  2. Enterprise level security starting with Identity Management that allows organisations to protect the data rather than the device and control who can do what and where. This removes the dependency on the user to be on the corporate network as data can securely be consumed and collaborated using the Microsoft services via the internet. It also reduces the dependency to use a corporate device as BYOD becomes a more accepted option in the corporate enterprise.  The evolution and maturity of Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) brings a further dynamic to the BYOD options.

  3. Communication tools that allows users to securely collaborate and communicate via, voice, video and chat from anywhere, at any time. Gone are the days of the all-day onsite workshop as these meetings are being replaced by tools and workspaces such as Microsoft Teams which allows users to join and participate without the need for being in the office. Working from home is a thing of the past, we now ‘Work Remotely’.  Organisations have also started to realise that corporate buildings come at a corporate cost and the adoption of these new ways of working can positively impact the balance sheet

...and the output of all the above? ... empowered employers and employees... all winners and no losers.
